Contact Dermatitis or Eczema

Contact Dermatitis or Eczema

Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory reaction of the skin caused by exposure to an irritant or allergen. There are two types of contact dermatitis: irritant and allergic. Although not contagious or dangerous, it can be very uncomfortable and significantly affect patients’ quality of life.

Symptoms include red, scaly, itchy lesions, and in more severe cases, blisters. Over time, the skin may crack, harden, and form crusts, potentially leading to painful wounds. Lesions are most common on the hands and face, often appearing in areas exposed to the allergen.

To diagnose allergic contact dermatitis, patch testing is performed. This involves applying adhesive patches with various potential allergens to the patient’s back to identify the substance causing the reaction.

Treatment primarily involves identifying and avoiding the allergen. While symptoms may persist for some time, it is essential to moisturise the skin with emollients and apply topical corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and relieve discomfort.
